How to group apps in the Mac Dock

Otterdock is a macOS Dock organizer with a visual editor for project groups. Keep your existing Apple Dock and start with one task, such as writing or development. For a simple folder of shortcuts, macOS also has built-in Dock folders.

How to Create and Add Custom Folders to the Mac Dock
01

Create a group for one project. Add its apps, working files, project folder, and reference links in Otterdock’s group editor. The free tier includes 2 groups with up to 8 items each.

02

Add the group to your Dock. In the Mac App Store edition, drag the group card from Otterdock to the folder area near the Trash. In Direct, sync the group to the Dock; this edition also offers custom popups, hover access, and global group shortcuts.

03

Choose an item to open. Use the group’s Dock menu, or add an Otterdock widget to your desktop or Notification Center. Widgets open individual items; they do not launch the whole group.

You Might Be Wondering

What is Otterdock and what does it do?
Otterdock is a macOS Dock organizer that groups apps, files, folders, and links into workflows. The Direct full edition features custom popups, hover expansion, and global shortcuts, while the Mac App Store edition uses native Dock folders. Both support desktop and Notification Center widgets.
What can I put in a group?
Apps, files, folders, and links — all in the same group. You can mix different item types freely, so a "Design" group could contain Figma, a project folder, and a reference PDF all together.
Do I have to grant permissions?
Native macOS Dock stacks do not need Otterdock Accessibility permission. Direct requests Accessibility permission for its custom Dock popup and hover interactions. Global group shortcuts do not need that permission. Choose native stacks if you do not want to grant Accessibility access.
Does Otterdock collect my data?
Group configurations and full file paths are stored locally on your Mac. In the current version, optional analytics never transmit group names, item names, full file paths, or file contents, and analytics can be turned off in Settings.
Which macOS versions are supported?
The Direct Full edition supports macOS 14 and newer on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The Mac App Store edition supports macOS 14 and newer on Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).
How much does Otterdock cost?
Both editions are free to download (2 groups, 8 items each); Pro is an optional one-time $6.99 purchase (Direct license via SaveTimeForFun or in-app purchase on the Mac App Store).
How is Otterdock different from macOS Dock folders?
Native Dock folders can hold documents, subfolders, web links, and aliases, but managing them manually in Finder takes effort. Otterdock provides a visual group editor and widgets on macOS 14 or later for streamlined organization.
How do I get a refund?
If you purchased from our website, contact [email protected] for refund requests, handled according to our published policy. If you purchased from the Mac App Store, please submit your request at reportaproblem.apple.com, where refunds are reviewed by Apple.
Can I open groups with keyboard shortcuts?
Yes, the Direct full edition supports global shortcuts for each group to open them from any app. You can configure key combinations for specific groups in Settings.
Who processes Otterdock payments?
Checkout for the Direct edition is handled by Creem as the Merchant of Record. Mac App Store transactions are processed by Apple. Your groups and paths always remain stored on your local Mac.
