Custom Dock Icon Skins on macOS: Shelf, Glass, Gradient, and More

Otterdock offers 6 built-in icon skins and supports custom imports. Learn about each skin style and how to create your own Dock folder icons.

Otterdock adds expandable groups to the macOS Dock (macOS 14+) and lets each group wear an icon skin so you can tell workflows apart at a glance. The app enhances the Dock—it does not replace it—and stores configuration under ~/Library/Application Support/Otterdock/. Groups can contain apps, files, folders, and links; open them with a click (no extra permissions) or with hover after enabling Accessibility.

Five preset skins plus custom import

Otterdock ships five built-in preset skins; you can also import your own image as a custom skin so groups are easy to tell apart at Dock size. Each option changes the look of the group's Dock icon while keeping the same grouping behavior:

SkinCharacter
ShelfBookshelf-style framing—a literal "shelf" for your stack.
GlassFrosted, translucent look that matches modern macOS surfaces.
GradientColor gradient fill for a bold, easy-to-spot group marker.
MinimalClean, low-ornament treatment when you want the quietest icon.
OtterBrand mascot styling for SaveTimeForFun's Otterdock identity.
Custom importUser-supplied artwork you import—your brand, your PNG, your rules.

Pro-exclusive skins

Beyond the five standard presets, Pro unlocks premium skins such as Sunset Warm that are not available on the free tier. You can preview every skin in the app before purchasing—browse the full catalog, see how each skin looks on your groups, and decide whether the upgrade is worth it for your setup. The skin catalog grows over time; new premium skins are added to Pro at no extra cost.

Why skins matter

When every group uses the default folder look, you scan text labels or guess from position. Skins add a second channel—shape and color—so "design tools" and "finance PDFs" feel different before you read a word. That is especially helpful if you use hover mode and groups expand often.

Importing custom skins

In Otterdock's skin settings, pick the custom import option and choose an image that reads clearly at Dock sizes. Prefer simple compositions with strong contrast; busy artwork can disappear next to app icons. After import, assign that skin to the group that should carry your personal or client branding—if you're a designer, see our designer-focused Dock setup guide for more ideas.

Pro unlocks unlimited groups, unlimited items, and premium skins; the free tier includes two groups with up to 8 items each—enough to compare presets and one custom import on real workflows before you upgrade.

Remember

Skins decorate Otterdock groups—they do not change how macOS draws standard app icons beside them. Pricing: $6.99 one-time direct, Mac App Store $2.99 planned (coming soon).
