Overview of the skin system
Every Otterdock group displays an icon on your Dock. Skins control how that icon looks — its shape, color, texture, and style. Instead of generic folder icons, skins give each group a distinct visual identity that matches your aesthetic. The skin system is built into group settings: select a group, browse available skins, and apply one with a single click.
Free skins
All users — free and Pro — have access to the core skin collection:
- Shelf — a clean, flat shelf look that blends naturally with the Dock.
- Glass — translucent, frosted-glass effect that catches light dynamically.
- Gradient — smooth color gradients that add subtle depth and personality.
- Minimal — stripped-back design for users who prefer the quietest visual footprint.
- Otter — the playful mascot skin, a friendly otter holding your group items.
- Custom import — bring your own PNG image and use it as the group icon.
Pro-exclusive skins
Pro unlocks premium skins designed with extra detail and polish. The first Pro-exclusive skin is:
- Sunset Warm — a rich, warm-toned gradient inspired by golden hour. It is the first of a growing collection of Pro-only skins that will expand with future updates.
More Pro skins are planned for upcoming releases. Each new skin will be available to all Pro users automatically — no additional purchase required.
How free users can preview Pro skins
Free users can browse and preview all Pro skins in the skin picker. The preview shows exactly how the skin will look on the Dock, so you can evaluate it before upgrading. The skin applies temporarily in the preview but reverts when you navigate away unless you are on the Pro tier.
Custom import workflow
Want to use your own artwork? Custom icon import lets you choose any PNG file as the group icon. Open group settings, select "Custom" in the skin picker, and browse for your image. Otterdock resizes and masks the image to fit the Dock icon dimensions. This works in both the free and Pro tiers.
Pricing: what each tier gets
The free tier includes all core skins (Shelf, Glass, Gradient, Minimal, Otter) plus custom import. Pro ($6.99 direct / $2.99 Mac App Store when available) adds the full Pro skin library on top of everything in the free tier, along with unlimited groups and all other Pro features.
